Anxiety Statistics Worldwide

Anxiety is the most common mental disorder in the United States and it’s on the rise. It currently impacts over 18% of adults in the U.S, that’s over 40 million people!

Despite having (successful) treatment options available, less than 1/3 of people struggling with anxiety seek help. Anxiety comes in many facets too. There are several different types of anxiety disorders that affect people in varying severities.

It’s not only Americans struggling with anxiety disorders.

It’s estimated that 7.3% of the world is impacted by anxiety. One approach used data from anxiety studies from 44 countries to get an estimate of how many people struggle with anxiety worldwide. While measuring anxiety across multiple languages and cultures can be tricky, this has been the largest collection of anxiety study data so far.

They also found that anxiety was much higher in high-income countries and lower in low-income countries.

Some of the most common anxiety disorders are Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, and Specific Phobias. While each type can have different symptoms, it’s not uncommon to struggle with more than one type. Specific Phobias are the most common, impacting 8.7% of the adult population in the United States.

This infographic takes an in-depth look at the anxiety rates in the U.S. and worldwide. You’ll learn about how it varies across gender and how to tell the difference between everyday anxiety and anxiety disorders.
