Fear of Public Speaking

10 percent of the population is terrified of public speaking. 3 in 4 people suffer from some form of public speaking anxiety. Public speaking is the number one fear, even feared more than death, spiders, social situations, and heights. This anxiety is also known as glossophobia, as the medical term for speech anxiety. The fear of public speaking causes nausea, panic attacks, and extreme anxiety. Speaking anxiety causes a fight or flight reaction where your blood pressure spikes due to the body releasing adrenaline and steroids. There is great importance in conquering the fear of public speaking for daily interactions or workplace abilities. A survey of 2,031 workers found that 12 percent of employees would step aside to let someone else present, even if it negatively impacted their career.
