Key figures from the chart
- In the 12 months to November 2024, the EU exported €529 billion to the United States and imported €336 billion from it.
- That left the EU with a €193 billion trade surplus with the US, the highest point of the yellow balance line on the chart.
- The chart runs from 2000 to November 2024 and marks three events: the 2008 financial crisis, the 2020 pandemic and Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
- The EU’s balance with the US stays above zero for the whole period shown.
- All figures are from the graphic, which cites Eurostat as its source of primary data.
EU US trade chart in text
The title reads “EU-U.S. Trade (LTM Nov 2024): €529B Exports, €336B Imports, €193B Surplus”. LTM means the last twelve months. The unit label reads “Trade Balance (Billion Euro, 12-Month Rolling Sum)”. Exports are drawn above zero, imports are drawn below zero, and the trade balance is a line over the export area. The y axis runs from minus 400 to 600 and the x axis is labelled 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2024-11.

What the lines show over time
The shapes on the chart tell the story. Exports dip after the 2008 marker and again around the 2020 marker, then climb steeply after 2021. Imports deepen sharply after the 2022 marker before easing back. The balance line rises over most of the period, falls back after the 2022 import jump, and finishes at its highest level in November 2024.
Econovis gives the context in the post that carries the chart. Total EU trade with the US in the 12 months to November 2024 was €866 billion, made up of the €529 billion of exports and €336 billion of imports [1]. Econovis says EU and US trade surged 37% in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and then held steady in 2023 and 2024 [1].
Eurostat links the import jump to energy. After Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the EU bought more energy products from the United States, so EU imports from the US grew faster than imports from China and the rest of the world [2].
EU US trade after this chart
Eurostat’s later figures show how quickly the picture moved. Trade tensions between the US and the EU pushed EU exports up in the first quarter of 2025, followed by a sharp drop for the rest of 2025 [2]. The EU’s quarterly goods surplus with the US narrowed from €80 billion in the first quarter of 2025 to €29 billion in the second quarter of 2026 [2]. Those figures are quarterly, so they are not directly comparable with the 12 month totals on this chart.
Notes on this infographic
- Period. Every printed value is a 12 month total ending November 2024. Later data are different (see above).
- Coverage. The chart cites Eurostat but does not say whether it covers goods only or goods and services. The Eurostat article used for context on this page covers trade in goods [2].
- Imports sign. Imports are drawn below zero and printed as minus 336. They are a positive €336 billion of purchases, shown as negative only so the balance can be read off the chart.
- Arithmetic. 529 minus 336 equals 193, so the three printed values agree.
