Minimum Wage Infographic, 67 Countries Compared in 2023

Key points

The map compares the monthly minimum wage for a full-time worker in 67 countries and territories in January 2023, after tax and converted to US dollars.
Luxembourg is highest at $2,140 a month, with Australia second at $2,022, followed by the Netherlands ($1,895) and New Zealand ($1,866).
Nigeria is lowest at $68, then India ($95) and Pakistan ($111).
The US figure is $1,550, just above Canada’s $1,545.
The data comes from Picodi. Countries without a statutory national minimum wage, such as Switzerland, Italy, Singapore and the Nordic countries, are not included [2].

How Picodi worked out the figures

Picodi, a discount coupon website, published the data on 17 January 2023 [2]. It compared the monthly minimum wage for full-time work in January 2023 with January 2022, taking rates from official government websites, ministries or committees [2]. It used net wages, the money employees take home, because the gap between gross and net pay ranged from 0% to 35% across the countries studied [2]. Net wages were worked out with salary calculators, and currencies were converted using the average Google Finance exchange rate for the fourth quarter of 2022 [2].

Where the minimum wage varies by region, as in the US, Canada, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, Picodi used the average of all regions [2]. That is why the US figure is well above the $7.25 an hour federal minimum, which Visual Capitalist notes has not changed since 2009 [1].

Changes from 2022

Picodi found that the minimum wage rose in 59 of the 67 countries between January 2022 and January 2023. Israel, Hong Kong and Nigeria were among the eight where it did not [2]. The largest rises were in Argentina (104.5%) and Turkey (100%), where Picodi says inflation and currency devaluation had been exceptionally high, followed by Moldova (32.5%), Latvia (27.1%) and Malaysia (25.8%) [2]. Visual Capitalist adds that the Turkish lira lost over 40% of its value in 2021 [1].

Not adjusted for living costs. The figures are converted at exchange rates, not purchasing power, so they do not show what the wage buys locally.
Dated figures. Values are for January 2023 and many countries have changed their minimum wages since.

Questions about minimum wages around the world

Which country has the highest minimum wage in the world?

In this January 2023 dataset, Luxembourg, at $2,140 a month after tax [1]. The dataset leaves out countries with no statutory national minimum [2]. A 2026 Visual Capitalist map using International Labour Organization data adjusted for living costs puts Switzerland first at $3,804 a month, based on regional rather than national minimum wages [3].

Which country has the lowest minimum wage in the world?

Of the 67 countries here, Nigeria, at $68 a month, followed by India at $95 and Pakistan at $111 [1]. Picodi notes that in Nigeria the minimum wage was not enough to buy its basic basket of food [2].
