Who are the top Instagram influencers?
The most followed people on Instagram are footballers and pop stars. Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed person on the platform, with more than 679 million followers, ahead of Lionel Messi with 517 million and Selena Gomez, the most followed woman, with 402 million [3]. Only Instagram’s own account, at 686 million, has more followers than Ronaldo [3].
ViralMango’s infographic above ranks the world’s top 50 Instagram influencers by followers, with its own estimates of how much engagement they get and what a sponsored post might cost [1][2]. The order at the top has barely changed since it was made, but the numbers have moved, so the figures below are the latest available, with the graphic’s estimates alongside.

Figures are from Wikipedia’s list of most-followed Instagram accounts, rounded down to the nearest million, as of November 2026 [3]. Brand accounts such as Instagram and Nike are left out. Kendall Jenner, Taylor Swift and Virat Kohli come next, each with 270 million or more [3].
When ViralMango made its chart, Ronaldo had 635 million followers, Messi 504 million and Selena Gomez 425 million [1]. Ronaldo and Messi have gained since, while several stars further down, including Gomez, Dwayne Johnson and Kim Kardashian, have fewer followers now than they did then.
What kind of people have the most followers?
Music dominates. On ViralMango’s top 50, 22 people are musicians, eight are athletes and eight are actresses (our count from the chart), and its summary names music as the top category and the US as the top country [1]. The list is not all American, though. Footballers top it because football has a global audience, India adds cricketer Virat Kohli, prime minister Narendra Modi and Bollywood stars such as Priyanka Chopra, Shraddha Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone, and K-pop is represented by Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo and Rosé of Blackpink [1].
The Kardashian and Jenner family deserve a mention of their own. Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian and Kendall Jenner are all in the top 15 people, and Kourtney Kardashian is in ViralMango’s top 20 [1][3].
Which influencers get the most engagement?
Followers are only part of the picture. Brands also look at engagement rate, the share of followers who like or comment on a typical post. ViralMango’s estimates show how much this varies even among the biggest names [1][2]:
- Taylor Swift had the highest estimated engagement rate in its top 19, at 3.2%, followed by Virat Kohli (2.35%) and Neymar (1.84%).
- Leo Messi (1.67%) and Cristiano Ronaldo (1.56%) combined huge followings with above-average engagement.
- Dwayne Johnson had the lowest, at 0.09%, with Katy Perry (0.13%) and Nicki Minaj (0.18%) also low.
- The average across its list was 1.71%.
Large accounts usually have lower engagement rates than small ones, because a smaller share of a giant audience sees and reacts to each post. That is one reason brands also work with smaller “micro” influencers, whose followers tend to be more engaged with a narrower topic.
How much do top Instagram influencers earn per post?
Nobody publishes official rates, so all figures are estimates. ViralMango’s calculator, which bases its estimate on followers and engagement, puts Cristiano Ronaldo at about $572,100 per sponsored post, Leo Messi at $555,900 and Selena Gomez at $468,700, with an average of $209,000 per post across its list [1][2]. Its estimates rise and fall almost exactly with follower numbers, so treat them as a guide to scale rather than what any star actually charges. Real deals are often long-term contracts covering several posts, appearances and other platforms.
How Instagram became the home of influencers
Instagram launched for the iPhone in October 2010, created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It reached one million users in two months and one billion registered users by June 2018, and Facebook bought it in April 2012 for about $1 billion [4]. Photo-led feeds, then Stories and Reels, made it the natural place for celebrities and creators to build personal brands, and for brands to pay them to reach their audiences.
