What the iPhone cost breakdown means

On the creator’s estimate, the iPhone kept about 39% of its revenue as gross profit in the quarter ($27.5 billion of $69.7 billion, our arithmetic). Apple’s gross margin across all products and services was about 46% ($54.9 billion of $119.6 billion) [2].

Apple reports cost of sales only in two lines, $58.44 billion for products and $6.28 billion for services, a total of $64.72 billion [2]. The chart’s $42.2 billion for the iPhone and $22.5 billion for everything else add up to the same $64.7 billion, so the creator has divided Apple’s reported total using outside teardown and research estimates. The split between iPhone and other products, and the cost of each component, cannot be checked against Apple’s figures.
