Montana Highway 200

Together with North Dakota Highway 200 and Minnesota State Highway 200, Montana Highway 200 forms a route of about 1,356 miles [2]. Wikipedia gives its Montana length as 706.272 miles and describes it as the longest route signed as a state highway in the United States [2]. North Dakota’s longest state highway is the same number, 200, on the map.

State highways, US routes and Interstates

The map covers state highways only. The longest roads in the country are national routes: US Route 20 runs 3,254.49 miles and is the longest road in the United States, roughly parallel in the east to Interstate 90 [3]. I-90 is the longest Interstate at 3,099.7 miles, and Montana has its longest section, almost 552 miles [4].

Notes on this infographic

  • Montana Highway 200: the map gives 706.5 miles, Wikipedia’s list 706.624 miles as of 2007 [1] and the route’s own article 706.272 miles [2]. The small differences come from different measurement dates and sources.
  • Alabama and Indiana: the map shows Alabama 3 and Indiana 37, while Wikipedia’s list names Alabama State Route 17 and Indiana State Road 62 [1]. The list notes that some states also number US and Interstate highways internally as state routes and excludes those [1], which may explain the difference. We have kept the map’s choices.
  • Florida A1A and New Jersey 47 are the longest signed state highways in those states. Wikipedia notes that unsigned designations are longer: Florida State Road 5, which runs along US 1 (536.724 miles), and New Jersey Route 444, the Garden State Parkway (172.4 miles) [1].
  • Wikipedia flags its own list as possibly out of date [1], so treat the lengths as approximate.
  • “Created with mapchart.net” names the mapping tool, not the person who made the map. We could not find the original post.
