Which country has the most billionaires
On Hurun’s count, China. Voronoi’s post for this graphic says China kept the top spot with 814 billionaires despite losing about 155 between 2023 and 2024, while the US gained 109, cutting the gap to 14 [1]. The same post notes that European countries make up six of the top 10 and nine of the top 20 [1].
Hurun is not the only billionaire list. Forbes publishes its own, and its 2024 figures put the US first. Indian Express, citing Forbes, lists 2,781 billionaires worldwide in 2024, with the US on 813, China on 406 and India on 200, and counts Hong Kong separately with 67 [2]. The two lists use different methods and valuation dates, so their country counts are not directly comparable.
Notes on this infographic
- Data date: the Hurun Global Rich List 2024; Voronoi posted this chart on 19 April 2024 [1]. Billionaire counts change with share prices, so later lists differ.
- The chart has no legend; the regional colour groups are our reading of the cell colours. Israel is coloured with the European countries.
- The Other cell (327) covers every country not named, so it cannot be compared with a single country.
- The rank order differs from Forbes’s 2024 list, which puts the US first; the two lists use different methods and valuation dates [2].
