How much data is created every day
The graphic does not give a daily figure, but its 149 zettabyte estimate for 2024 allows a rough one. Dividing 149 zettabytes by the 366 days of 2024 gives about 0.41 zettabytes a day, or roughly 407 exabytes. Dividing again by 1,440 minutes gives about 283 petabytes a minute. These are our own calculations from the graphic’s number, which it attributes only to “industry analysts”.
What changed from the previous edition
Domo’s press release for the 12th edition, published on 18 December 2024, compares some figures with earlier years. It says Google searches fell by 6%, from 6.3 million a minute the year before to 5.9 million in 2024, which Domo suggests may be a sign of AI chat tools taking some search traffic [1]. It also says Netflix hours streamed per minute were down 19% since 2021, while snaps sent on Snapchat were up 37% from 2022 [1].

Notes on this infographic
- Internet users. The graphic’s 5.52 billion people online is close to the International Telecommunication Union’s estimate of 5.5 billion for 2024, though the ITU puts it at 68% of the world’s population rather than 67.5% [2].
- Sources. The graphic lists 15 sources but does not say which figure comes from which. Several are secondary statistics sites rather than the platforms themselves, so individual figures could not be checked.
- Data date. This is the 2024 edition. Domo publishes a new Data Never Sleeps graphic each year, so the per-minute figures here are a snapshot.
