How Paris 2024 compares

As host nation, France won 64 medals at Paris 2024, including 16 gold, and finished fifth in the medal table, its first top five finish since 1996 [3]. The Games ran from 26 July to 11 August 2024 [2]. The chart’s Paris line stops at about 57 medals on day 13, so it was made before the Games ended; France added roughly seven more medals in the final days (our arithmetic from the final total).

The 64 medals were 21 more than France’s best total in the eight earlier Games on the chart, 43 at Beijing 2008 (our arithmetic [2]). Paris 2024 also had the most French competitors of the nine Games, 573 against 401 at Rio 2016, the next largest team [2]. In the Reddit thread under the chart, commenters pointed out that host nations qualify automatically for many events and often receive extra funding in the years before a home Games [1].

France as an Olympic host

France has hosted the Olympic Games six times: the Summer Games in Paris in 1900, 1924 and 2024, and the Winter Games in Chamonix in 1924, Grenoble in 1968 and Albertville in 1992 [4]. It is due to host a seventh, the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps [2]. Through Paris 2024, French athletes had won 815 medals at the Summer Games [2].

Notes on this infographic

  • The chart prints no values, no source and no creator. Values on this page are read from the lines (approximate) or taken from Wikipedia (final totals).
  • The Paris 2024 line ends at day 13 with about 57 medals. The final total was 64 [3].
  • Our reading of the day 16 endpoints matches the final totals in the table to within about one medal, for example about 29 for Barcelona 1992 against an actual 29.
  • The number of events differs between Games, so totals are not strictly like for like. Paris 2024 had 329 events [2].
