Which states have the most Reddit users?
Reddit doesn’t publish user numbers by state, so the best available guide is how many people have joined each state’s own subreddit, such as r/vermont or r/texas, compared with how many people live there. Robert Allison’s map does exactly that, using member counts gathered on 12 August 2024.
On that measure the most Reddit-heavy states per head of population were:

Most of these are small states by population, and five of the ten are in New England. Montana (6.1%), Wyoming (6.0%), Colorado (5.7%), Minnesota (5.4%) and North Dakota (5.1%) come next.
States with the lowest share
At the other end, the biggest states have the smallest shares. New York is lowest by a distance at 0.4%, followed by California (1.3%), Florida, Illinois and Tennessee (1.5% each), Louisiana (1.7%), Missouri (1.8%), Georgia (1.9%) and Texas (2.0%).
That doesn’t mean New Yorkers or Californians use Reddit less. The likeliest reason is that people in big states join city subreddits instead. Someone in New York City has r/nyc, and someone in Los Angeles has r/LosAngeles, so they have less reason to join the state one. In a small or rural state, the statewide subreddit is often the main local community, a point commenters made when the map was posted [1]. Neither the map nor the thread measures this, but it fits the pattern closely.
What state subreddit numbers can and can’t tell you
A state subreddit’s member count is a rough guide to Reddit use, not a census. A few things push the numbers around:
- Members don’t have to live there. Anyone can join, including people who have moved away, people planning a move, and visitors. One commenter suggested Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine pick up members from neighbouring states who come for skiing, mountain biking and hiking [1].
- Old and inactive accounts count. A member count includes everyone who ever joined and never left, even if they haven’t visited in years [3].
- Bots and duplicate accounts. The map’s creator wondered whether every state subreddit carries a similar base of bot accounts, which would make small states look higher, while saying the map doesn’t prove it [1].
- Population size. The same number of extra members moves a small state’s percentage much more than a large one’s.
As a check, a moderator of r/kansas said in the thread that it had “a tad over 70,000 members and about 3,000,000 residents” [1]. That works out at about 2.3%, close to the 2.4% shown for Kansas (our arithmetic).
How many people in the US use Reddit?
For a more reliable picture of Reddit use across the whole country, surveys and Reddit’s own figures are better than subreddit counts. Pew Research Center’s 2026 survey found that 25% of US adults say they use Reddit, up from 11% in 2019 [2]. Use is highest among:
- younger adults: 40% of 18 to 29 year olds, against 6% of those aged 65 and over
- men (27%) more than women (23%)
- college graduates (36%) and people with household incomes of $100,000 or more (36%)
- suburban (29%) and urban (27%) residents, much more than rural residents (16%)
That last point is worth noting against the map. Small rural states have high state subreddit shares, but rural Americans as a whole use Reddit less, which supports the idea that the map mostly shows where people join a statewide community rather than where Reddit use is highest.
Reddit itself reported 50.7 million daily active users in the US in the third quarter of 2026, out of 130.3 million worldwide. US daily users were down 2% on a year earlier, while international users grew 24% [4]. These figures are as of November 2026 and change every quarter.
How to check subreddit stats now
If you want to measure state subreddits yourself, note that Reddit has changed what it shows. In September 2025 it began replacing public member counts with two new figures: weekly visitors, the number of unique people who visited a community in the past seven days (based on a 28-day rolling average), and weekly contributions, the number of posts and comments in the past seven days [3][5]. Total member counts are now only visible to a community’s moderators [5].
That means a map like this one can’t be redrawn from public member counts any more. Weekly visitors is arguably a better measure of an active community, because it ignores people who joined years ago and left, but it isn’t comparable with the August 2024 figures on the map.
Where the state figures come from
The map was posted to r/dataisbeautiful on 13 August 2024 by u/graphguy, with an interactive version on robslink.com, the site of SAS graphics programmer Robert Allison [1][6]. He said he used the same data as an earlier Reddit map of state subreddit member counts, and wasn’t sure exactly how those numbers had been worked out, so treat the figures as approximate [1]. The map doesn’t say which year’s population estimates were used.

Vermont, on state subreddit membership. Members of r/vermont were equal to 15.3% of the state’s population in August 2024, ahead of Alaska (13.4%) and Hawaii (9.6%).
Which state uses Reddit the least?
New York had the lowest share at 0.4%, followed by California at 1.3%. Big states have busy city subreddits, so this probably reflects where people join rather than how much they use Reddit.
