What the Fan Cost Index measures
The figures come from the Fan Cost Index published by Team Marketing Report (TMR) [3], as the line under the chart says. The formula printed on the graphic prices the same set of purchases at every ballpark, so each figure is the cost of a group outing rather than the price of a single ticket. A team with high ticket and parking prices can rank near the top even if its food is cheaper.
The basket on this chart is built for a family or group of four. Four tickets make up the largest part of the total in the example prices, at $200 of the $379.42 the seven lines add up to (our sum). Parking is the next biggest single item at $60.
Which ballparks are the most expensive
The chart names teams, not stadiums, but each team played at its home ballpark in 2023. The Red Sox play at Fenway Park in Boston, which opened in 1912 and is the oldest ballpark in the majors [4]. Infographic Journal, which reposted this graphic in April 2024, describes Fenway Park as the most expensive option on it [2].
The top five are the Red Sox, Yankees, Astros, Cubs and Dodgers, all above $345. The Yankees, Cubs and Dodgers play at Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium, which are among the eight ballparks without a corporate naming rights deal [4]. At the other end, the Miami Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks are the only teams below $200.

- Hot dog count. The formula under the chart says 2 hotdogs, while the essentials section shows 4 regular-size hot dogs. The graphic does not say which is used in the team totals.
- Example prices. The seven essentials lines add up to $379.42 (our sum). That does not match any team on the chart or the league average, so they are best read as an illustration of the basket.
- League average. The average of the 30 printed team figures is $266.61 (our calculation), close to the printed $266.58. The small gap may come from rounding in the source.
- Source not checked. We could not open the TMR 2023 MLB Fan Cost Index itself, so the team figures are as printed on the graphic.
